MENA Nutraceuticals Market Growth Driven By Increasing Adoption of Nutraceuticals in the Region

MENA Nutraceuticals

A nutraceutical or "bioceutical" is a medical alternative that promises health-enhancing benefits through the ingestion of extracts. In the U.S, "nutraceuticals" are unregulated, since they technically exist in the same legal category as food additives and dietary supplements by the FDA. The U.S government does not regulate nutraceuticals, so it's up to the states to set their own regulations, sometimes with very poor standards for quality control. In Canada, on the other hand, nutraceuticals are recognized as medications and are required to meet much stricter federal and state regulations. In Germany, nutraceuticals are not subject to mandatory approval regulations. Pursuant to the German Food Supplements Regulation (NemV), food supplements must be registered with the Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety.

Increasing adoption of nutraceuticals to aid in growth of the MENA nutraceuticals market. Nutraceuticals offer less or no side effects and more nutritional values compared to conventional pharmaceuticals. For instance, amla (Emblica officinalis), Curcumin, Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), and vitamins are effective against obesity. Nutraceutical are usually made of more high-quality ingredients that have been selected based on clinical studies and scientific research. For example, nutraceutical containing collagen, functional foods and probiotics have been shown to provide some benefit to health. Many plants have been shown to provide health benefits, as well.

R&D in nutraceuticals is also expected to aid in growth of the MENA nutraceuticals market. In April 2020, the study, “Characteristics of Potential Protein Nutraceuticals of Plant Origin with Antioxidant Activity”, reported that nutraceuticals were more frequently released from rice protein and less frequently released from barley and other cereal protein species.

Functional foods containing all kinds of different antioxidants can help prevent diseases, including cancer. But very few companies have the facilities to process these compounds into usable form. Instead, most nutraceutical are isolated compounds with no discernible external chemical structure. In contrast, nutraceutical containing omega-3 fatty acids and other plant extracts have been shown to reduce blood triglycerides and improve cardiovascular health. This is because fatty acids act like small road blocks. They've been shown to prevent inflammation and enhance vascular health. By preventing the inflammation and enhancing vascular health, dietary fibers such as those in nuts and seeds are very effective.
