Filament Tapes Have Become an Indispensable Part of Almost Every Industry
Filament tapes, also known as strapping tapes, are pressure-sensitive tapes that are used in a variety of packaging applications such as closing reinforcing packages, fiberboard boxes, pallet unitizing, bundling items, etc. Filament tapes are coated onto a backing material which can be a fiberglass, or polyester film or polypropylene and it offers moisture and abrasion resistance, high tensile strength, provides good shear and initial adhesion, and also provides good handling for utility applications. These tapes are widely used in various industries, such as packaging, flooring, furniture making, manufacturing, petroleum, pulp and paper milling, automotive, chemical, rubber, cooling, etc.
Moreover, filament tapes provide longer package life due to
the presence of adhesions and filaments, and allow printing to be viewed
through tape, making them more attractive. They are available in different
qualities or thicknesses to suit the requirements of various customers.
Filament tapes can be used either as single or double sided tape depending on
the situation. The most commonly used variety of this tape is the one sided
tape that is capable of sealing and protecting different products. They are
generally made up of a number of synthetic resins, plastics, and other
materials that make it a durable and cost effective packaging tool.
The single sided tape is known for its adhesive quality
which makes it useful for sealing and protecting small and delicate objects and
also because it offers good protection from ultraviolet light. The double sided
tape has various sized holes that can be used to fasten different varieties of
gels, foams, adhesives, and various liquids such as cleaning solvents, lubricants,
petroleum products, etc. There are also special versions of this tape that are
available in the form of fire retardant tapes. The foremost advantage is its
durability that ensures long term usage of the product. Thus, filament tapes
have become an indispensable part of almost every industry.
With the booming packaging and tape industry, as well as
expanding e-commerce around the globe, the demand for filament tapes is also
increasing with a rapid pace. For instance, in 2019, BASF (U.S.) and Toray
Advanced Composites (U.S.) signed an agreement to manufacture and supply
fiber-reinforced thermoplastic tapes for the automotive and industrial markets.
