Demand For Breathable Films Increases Significantly With Emergence of Covid-19 and Resultant Surge in Demand for Medical Gloves, Masks, and Other Products
Increasing demand for comfortable and safe use packaging materials that are convenient to use and maintain quality of packaged products has led to surge in manufacturing of breathable films. These films are known for their moisture vapor transmission rate and find application in perm housewrap, bed encasements, mattress, pillow protectors, and waterproof apparel.
Breathable films made
from non-porous materials are widely used in the packaging industry. These
films are capable of changing the gas permeability, thereby responding to
desired and undesired temperature fluctuations. There are several advantages of
breathable films. These films help minimize anaerobiosis originating from the
accumulation of CO2 in packaging. Non-porous breathable films help avoid issues
such as intrusion of insects and microorganisms, permeation of moisture, and
loss of flavor in agricultural products and food.
Ground calcium
carbonates are used for breathable film applications such as diapers, medical
and hygiene products, roofing and agricultural films. These films are cost-effective
and offer moisture control in a wide range of applications. In the healthcare
sector, breathable films are used in the production of barrier gowns, diapers,
drapes, examination gowns, filtration, gloves, incontinence pads, masks, medical
sheets, napkins, operation bed covers, operating cloth, patient gowns, sanitary
towels, under-pads, wound dressing, and wipes.
The demand for
breathable films has significantly increased with the emergence of Covid-19 and
resultant surge in demand for medical gloves, masks, and other products. For instance,
in the U.S., from January 2020, to 5:31pm CET, 28 February 2021, there have
been 28,174,978 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 506,760 deaths. Such scenario
has prompted various companies to invest in R&D of these films. For
instance, in December 2020, Berry Global Group Inc., the U.S.-based
manufacturer and marketer of plastic packaging products, announced that phase
one of the three phase, US$ 20 million Sof-Flex film expansion plan is on track
to be operational in December 2020.
