Bone Glue; an Integral Part of the Healthcare Industry, Considered Inferior to Skin and Parchment Glues

Bone Glue

Bone glue is a strong, liquid, protein-based adhesive made from collagen in bones, sinew, and cartilage. They are used as carton and box adhesives. The bone glue production process is complex, which involves obtaining animal bones from various slaughterhouses, tanneries, and meat packaging companies. It is widely used in the healthcare industry, as well as in carpentry, manuscript publishing, and gun powder production applications. Moreover, bone glue is also used in woodwork, book publishing, and match head production applications.

Bone glue is a natural colloid of animal protein derived exclusively from collagen protein that is used as an industrial strength adhesive, coating, and compounding, to manufacture colloidal products such as compounding powder, capsules, powders, sheets, and foams. Collagen is the fibrous protein that is found throughout the entire body of all mammals, including humans. Collagen is the main structural protein of connective tissue and is also the main protein of the elastic tissue that provides flexibility in tissues and bones. It is a very important component because without collagen there is no bone, muscle or ligament, it simply cannot be built.

Bone glue is prepared by boiling bones, to remove the fatty matter, and then treating them with hydrochloric acid. Then they are washed in an alkaline bath, to neutralize the acid. Bone glue is used in compounding and compounded pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, dental implants, oral fillings, pharmaceutical drugs, pharmaceuticals, scleroses, nasal sprays, topical acne ointments, shampoos, lotions, whipped cream, baby medicines, vitamins, nutritional supplements, skin creams, and hormones. It can be used as a hardener, an emulsifier, an inorganic scavenger, as a biocompatible, as a leaching agent, and as a binder for making a vast array of different kinds of cosmetic and medical products.

With the increasing prevalence of bone disorders, such as osteoarthritis (common form of arthritis), the demand for bone glue is also increasing. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), around one in four (or 54.4 million) U.S. adults have some form of arthritis, and the number is expected to reach 78 million by 2040.
