Holographic Films; Often Used For Brand-Enhancing Packaging Applications

Holographic films are very thin, flexible plastic films {Nylon (Bonyl), Oriented Polypropylene (OPP) and Polyester (PET)} that have been micro-embossed with patterns or even images. These patterns or images are created on the film by the embossing process to provide 3D (three dimensional) effect or/and spectral (rainbow) coloring. These films are extensively used for promotional purposes as they have flexible texture with flawless finish and 3D effects. Security stickers, gift wrapping, packaging products, labeling products, and promotional brochures are some of the major application areas of holographic films.

The principle of holographic films is based on the science of light and lasers. These films have revolutionized the means of digital image capture forever! Holographic films offer several advantages over customary digital capture, such as cost effective and improved image quality. Most holographic films are comprised of plastic and are available in rolls or sheets. The rolls can be easily cut to different sizes, depending on the required size of the display. This reduces the amount of time that it takes to manufacture the films and also enables the user to take the films with them wherever they go.

Holography films are widely used for brand protection (premium and decorative packaging, and aesthetic appeal), as they increase the brand value and protect against counterfeiting of the end products, making it completely holographic. The emulsion (holographic and regular film) is made of a mixture of gelatin and silver halide crystals. Moreover, to make sealable films, holographic films can be laminated to form, fill, and seal roll stock packaging or premier flexible bags to make consumer packaging and specialty gift boxes and bags.

Thus, there is an increasing demand for holographic films from the packaging industry, as well as due to growing adoption for hologram technologies form various end-use industries such as automotive, cosmetics, medical, food and beverages, and etc. For instance, in 2019, API Group (U.S.) expanded its range of Transmet products with the introduction of new holographic designs. The new range of 12 holographic patterns is available in API’s Transmet laminate.
