Increasing Number of People Consuming Only Vegetarian Food to Boost Demand for Plant-Based Cheese

Plant-Based Cheese

Have you ever wondered why there are so many plant-based and organic cheeses available nowadays? Many people who have gone "vegan" and for health reasons have turned to eating plant-based foods. According to The Vegan Society, the number of people consuming only vegetarian food in the U.K. increased from 276,000 in 2016 to 600,000 in 2019.

Plant-based cheese is 100 percent animal-free and is produced from soy; nuts, and vegetable oils. Not only can you get a wide variety of different cheeses created for vegans, but they are also easy to find and afford as well. Although milk and other dairy products are widely used in the making of cheeses, the taste of vegan cheese is more striking. This is because most plant-based cheeses contain no lactose, which makes it far easier for people who do not prefer dairy products. Vegan cheese is often better tasting and has a stronger flavor than other types of cheeses.

High demand for plant-based products has led to development and launch of plant-based cheese. In February 2021, kitskitchen Health Foods Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Modern Meat Inc., a Canada-based plant-based food manufacturer, announced to launch a selection of dairy-free artisan cheeses.  Such high demand has also prompted multinational companies to acquire vegan food manufacturers. In February 2021, Danone, a France-based food company, acquired Follow Your Heart, a U.S.-based vegan egg, cheese, and mayonnaise brand.

There are literally hundreds of different kinds of cheeses available for vegans, but vegan cheese is not a diet replacement for traditional dairy cheeses. Plant-based cheese can be used in a variety of different recipes, although some people prefer a different variety of texture and taste, and some would rather have no dairy products in their diet. The decision on what to eat depends mostly on personal preference, although both vegans and non-vegans will typically agree on certain taste preferences like nutty or cheesy, etc.
