Chromium Salts; Used As an Ingredient in the Manufacture of Many Other Products

Chromium Salts

Chromium salts are widely used to manufacture many products such as anticorrosives, paints, leather, mortar, and cement. It is a lustrous, brittle, and hard chemical element in nature, and is extracted from very commonly found ore called chromites. Various metal compounds can be formed by mixing this element with other elements. Chromium salts are highly resistant to tarnish, resistive against corrosion, and have high melting point. Chromium salts are widely used in dyes and pigments, metallurgy, inks, tanning, as a catalyst, and as a wood preservative.

Chromium salts are used for many different uses. The most common is as an additive to a variety of paints and coatings in order to prevent them from rusting or react with certain metals in the paint to prevent them from being scratched. The other common use is as an antiseptic. When used correctly, the salt will not alter the color of the paint at all, but instead will penetrate deep into the paint to provide it with minerals that naturally fight corrosion. These minerals are important to have on hand in case of an emergency since they can be quite expensive and not always covered by regular insurance.

Chromium salts can also be used as a source of energy in the form of electricity, although this technology still isn't very commonplace. There are some industrial applications where the use of this salt is still fairly new and still undergoing refinements, which uses the mineral for the conversion of direct current to alternating current. They are primarily used in the automotive industry and as part of the final testing before factory production. There are a few forms of chromium salts with differing levels of ionic stability. The most stable form, chromium trioxide, is used for electroplating purposes and is the salt used in electronics.

In the United States, trivalent chromium (III) ion is considered an essential nutrient in humans for insulin, sugar, and lipid metabolism. Chromium salts are also the cause of allergic reactions in some people. Chromium (III) salts are used in the tanning of leather.
