A Quick Overview; Epileptic Seizures Treatment Depends On the Type of Seizures
Epileptic seizures treatment involves medicines called anti-epileptic drugs (AEDs), a special diet (ketogenic diet), surgery to remove a small part of the brain that's causing the seizures, and a small electrical device that help control seizures. Epilepsy is categorized as a neurological (central nervous system) disorder in which brain activity becomes abnormal, leading to seizures or abnormal behavior, sensations, and sometimes loss of awareness. Epilepsy is usually treated by medication and in some cases by surgery, devices, or dietary changes.
Epilepsy is one
of the common chronic neurologic diseases that affects individuals from
all age groups. Epilepsy
affects millions of people worldwide. Mexico’s Ministry of Health said that
according to the World Health Organization, epilepsy affects 50 million people
worldwide, while in Mexico there are about two million people affected by this
condition. As epilepsy is emerging as an important cause of disability and
mortality worldwide, the development and discovery of new epileptic seizures treatment has received considerable attention.
Moreover, the prevalence of epilepsy is higher in men
compared to women. The prevalence of focal seizures is higher in both children
and adults than that of generalized seizures. Whereas, epileptic seizures are
less prevalent in middle-income countries, due to which demand for epileptic
seizures from treatment developing regions is high. Lack of advanced medical
infrastructure, misdiagnosis, and acute symptomatic seizures are some of the
major factors responsible for the high prevalence of epileptic seizures in
developing regions.
